DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: Oppression Behind Closed Doors

Every minute, nearly 20 people are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. It can happen to anyone, regardless of age, race, gender, or socioeconomic status. But for those in communities of faith, this epidemic of domestic violence can be even more insidious, taboo, or even excused. This problem crosses all faiths, is in all neighborhoods, and in our homes. We have an obligation as people of faith who understand that we are answerable to some Higher Being to be upstanders, not bystanders, as we witness this scourge. What are our communities doing practically to address this epidemic and what initiatives can and must we take individually?
